What Is a Neck Lift?
The neck usually ages before the face does, and it’s the part people notice in photos and video calls. A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is surgery that restores a clean line from chin to collarbone by tightening the platysma muscle, removing or repositioning fat under the chin, and trimming the skin that’s left over. Depending on what’s causing the problem, Dr. Carvajal may do all three or only one. Because the neck and lower face age together, a neck lift is often combined with a facelift so the jawline and the neck match. If your main concern is early looseness without a lot of extra skin, MyEllevate is a lighter, suture-based alternative he also offers.
Patient Reviews
Everyone was super friendly and overall had a great experience! I was super nervous going into my surgery but my assistant Tanya was amazing at calming me down and ensuring I was okay!
What a Neck Lift Treats
Four things, mainly. Loose or crepey skin that hangs below the jaw, sometimes called a turkey neck. Vertical bands that show when you talk or tense your neck, which are the edges of the platysma muscle pulling apart. Fullness under the chin that doesn’t go away with weight loss, because it’s often deep fat or a low-set muscle rather than surface fat. And jowls, where the lower face has slid down and blurred the jawline. A neck lift handles all four; liposuction alone handles only the fat, and Botox in the bands only works for a few months.
What a Neck Lift Doesn’t Do
It doesn’t lift the cheeks or the mid-face, so if the jowls are severe you’ll get a better result pairing it with a facelift. It doesn’t fix skin texture, sun damage or horizontal neck lines in the skin itself; that’s what Morpheus8 and resurfacing are for. And it doesn’t stop aging. It resets the clock, and the clock keeps running.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?
Most neck lift patients are between 45 and 70, in good general health, and bothered by one specific thing: the neck. Non-smokers heal far better, so Dr. Carvajal will ask you to stop well before surgery. Skin that still has some elasticity gives the best result, which is one reason not to wait too long once it starts to bother you. If you’re younger with mostly fat under the chin and good skin, you may not need a full neck lift at all; that’s a conversation for the consultation, not something to guess at from a website.
What Happens During Neck Lift Surgery
Neck lift surgery is outpatient and takes two to three hours under IV sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on the degree of change you want, your choices include a traditional or limited incision neck lift. A traditional neck lift often begins in the hair line and continues down and around the ear and ends behind the ear in the hair line. A limited incision neck lift may involve incisions only around the ear. After your surgery, incision lines are closed. Sutures used may dissolve on their own or they may need to be removed in a few days. Once healed, incision lines are usually well concealed in the hairline and/or in the contours of the ear.
Neck Lift Recovery
Following surgery, Dr. Carvajal may put a bandage around your neck to minimize swelling and bruising. A drain may also be present to prevent blood or fluid from collecting under the skin. Dr. Carvajal will give you instructions on how to care for your surgical site, what medicines to take or apply, and when to follow up. Keep your head elevated above your heart for the first week, including while you sleep, to keep swelling down. Most patients are back to desk work in 10 to 14 days and see the bruising fade over the same period. Light exercise resumes at about two weeks, anything strenuous at four. The neck will feel tight for a few weeks; that’s the muscle repair settling in, and it eases. The final result shows at around three months once the last of the swelling has gone.
Neck Lift FAQ
How much does a neck lift cost in Virginia?
It depends on whether you need the full procedure or a limited incision version, and whether it’s combined with a facelift. You’ll get a written quote at your consultation, and financing is available. Call 434-616-4986 to ask about current pricing.
Neck lift or MyEllevate, which is right for me?
MyEllevate uses a light-guided suture to support the neck from underneath with tiny incisions and a faster recovery. It works well for early laxity and mild bands. Once there’s real excess skin or heavy fat, a surgical neck lift is the only thing that will fix it. Dr. Carvajal offers both, so you’ll get an honest recommendation rather than whichever one the practice happens to sell.
Do I need a facelift as well?
If the jowls and cheeks are sagging too, yes, probably. Doing a neck lift alone in that case can leave the lower face looking mismatched. If the face still looks good and only the neck bothers you, a neck lift on its own is the right call.
How long does a neck lift last?
Ten years or more is typical. The muscle repair is permanent; what changes over time is the skin, which keeps aging at its normal pace.
Will there be visible scars?
Incisions sit behind the ear and, for a full neck lift, in a small crease under the chin. Once healed they’re hard to find even when you’re looking.
I’m not in Lynchburg. Is it worth the drive?
Patients come from Roanoke, Charlottesville, Richmond and elsewhere in Virginia. Surgery is outpatient, so you’ll need someone with you the first night, and we’ll schedule follow-ups around your travel.
