How Laser Hair Removal Works
The laser sends a pulse of light into the skin, where the pigment in the hair absorbs it and turns it into heat. That heat damages the follicle enough that it stops producing hair, or produces much finer, lighter hair. Each pulse treats an area about the size of a coin in a fraction of a second, so a lip takes minutes and a full back takes under an hour. It works best when there’s contrast between hair and skin, which is why dark hair on lighter skin responds fastest, though modern lasers handle a wider range of skin tones than they used to.
Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects follicles in the active growth phase, so it takes a series of sessions, usually six to eight spaced a few weeks apart, to catch them all. After that most patients see a lasting reduction, with an occasional touch-up. It isn’t permanent for everyone, but it’s the closest thing to it. At Lynchburg Aesthetics your treatment is done in a medical practice overseen by Dr. William Carvajal, not a beauty salon.

Why Lynchburg Patients Choose Laser Over Waxing
Waxing and shaving work, right up until you have to do them again. Here’s what changes with laser.
- Precision. The laser targets the pigment in the hair and leaves the surrounding skin alone.
- Speed. Each pulse treats many hairs at once. An upper lip takes a few minutes, underarms about ten, legs closer to an hour.
- Results that hold. Most people see a real drop in hair after three or four sessions and a lasting reduction once the series is done.
- Works almost anywhere. Face, neck, underarms, arms, bikini line, legs, back and chest. We’ll tell you at your consultation how your hair and skin tone are likely to respond.
- Less painful than waxing. Most people describe it as a rubber band snap. Sensitive areas can be numbed first.
- No more ingrown hairs. Because the hair stops growing rather than being cut or pulled, the bumps and irritation that come with shaving and waxing go with it.
- Cheaper over time. Add up a few years of waxing appointments and razors and a laser series usually comes out ahead.
Laser Hair Removal FAQ
How many sessions will I need?
Usually six to eight, four to six weeks apart, then a touch-up once or twice a year if needed. Coarse dark hair often needs fewer; fine or light hair needs more.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
It stings, like a rubber band flick, and it’s over quickly. Most people find it easier than waxing. Numbing cream is available for the bikini area and upper lip.
How should I prepare?
Shave the area a day before, and stop waxing, plucking or tweezing for at least four weeks beforehand so the follicle is there for the laser to hit. Avoid sun and tanning for two weeks before and after each session.
How much does laser hair removal cost in Lynchburg?
Pricing depends on the area and the number of sessions. Package pricing is available. Call 434-616-4986 for current rates or ask at your consultation.
Is it safe for darker skin?
Modern lasers can treat a wider range of skin tones than older ones, but settings matter. Our team will assess your skin and hair at your consultation and tell you what to expect.
